Training Programs in Palliative Care
A. Volunteers
- Awareness Program in Palliative Care (1 hour) introduces palliative care and the role of the community. Generally organized at public areas, the intention is to spread awareness and arouse interest in potential volunteers.
- Training Program in Palliative Care (16 hours theory + 4 days observation of patient care activities) is recommended to persons who want to volunteer & can spare 2 hours/week. Training occurs at a place convenient to the trainee.
- Training the Trainer Program (3 days) trains volunteers to become trainers. This program helps volunteers learn the skill to teach. Only active volunteers with a minimum of 6 months field experience are admitted to the program.
B. Medical Students
- Introductory Sessions as part of Community Medicine Posting: At the time spent at the Community Medicine Department in Calicut, students get an introductory class on palliative care to help understand its existence.
- Basics of Communication (Three days): Students studying their third year of MBBS are referred to the Community Medicine Department to learn basics of communication
C. Nurses:
Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Nursing (BCCPN) A six week intensive hands on training in palliative care for Nurses. The course, offered by the Pain and Palliative Care society in Calicut, Kerala, South India, is aimed at acquiring and enhancing knowledge, skills and attitude. The course is suitable for nurses with an interest or some previous experience in palliative care. Certificate Course in Essentials of Palliative Care-
A basic course in Palliative Care for Doctors and Nurses.
Eight weeks of learning at home through Distance Education.
Three days of contact session & evaluation.
Two weeks Clinical Placement (Optional)
Diploma in Nursing / BSc Nursing in the case of Nurses
Course delivered through different Palliative Care Centres in India

Foundation Course in Palliative Nursing: A 15-day residential program where trainees are introduced to the concept & practice of palliative care with supervised hands-on experience.
E. Doctors:
- Basic Certificate Course in Palliative Medicine (BCCPM) A six week intensive hands on training in palliative care for doctors Palliative care is a growing specialty in India. Few centers devote all their time to patients with incurable diseases and is suitable for doctors with an interest or some previous experience in palliative care.. There are no training programs in South East Asia with an emphasis on clinical skills. BCCPM Application Form
- Fellowship Programme in Palliative Medicine The Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) and the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM have jointly collaborated to organize this distance learning – fellowship programme for doctors in Palliative Medicine. Palliative Medicine is an integral part of the complete care rendered to those affected by terminally ill diseases. Special knowledge and skills are needed in order to care for and treat these patients with special needs. While people all over the world have realized its importance and relevance, the concept still needs to gather support and involvement in our country.
- Diploma in Medicine (Palliative Care) of Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. The BCCPM is considered half the diploma by the university.
