The Home Care Programme

In India family bonds are still very strong. Using this advantage, PPCS works in partnership with family members. For patients who are otherwise unable to travel to the hospital due to financial, social and/or physical reasons, our community palliative care staff provides help, support and advice about their illness in the comfort of their own home. This could be one visit or several over a period of time whilst they need our support.

Through this we are able to:
Assess the needs of the patients, carers and families
Co-ordinate with other care services
Provide emotional support by listening, caring and understanding
Provide bereavement support to relatives and friend

This five-day per week ‘Home Care Program’ became operational in June 1996. There are two teams, one led by a doctor and the other by a nurse. From the main Centre in Calicut alone, this program generates 20-25 patients visit every week.

For the first time in Calicut, a new ‘24x7 Home Care Project’ that assures patients palliative care at all times. A new home care unit designed to provide palliative care after standard home care services have concluded (i.e. from 5p.m. - 7a.m. & Sundays) has been introduced. Going from home to home, this unit comprising of 2 nurses will offer palliative care to patients who require them ‘after hours’. The team will however remain at the IPM after 9p.m. at night & will respond only to emergency situations. Patients or relatives can contact this home care team (Tel: +91 88915 85808) to manage difficult situations.

We hope that in the future, a community network of volunteers is established who are able to manage, assess and look after the patient with only the support and guidance of PPCS.
